Bedside Clinical Systems has developed the Responses to Illness Severity Quantification (RISQ) framework severity of illness clinical decision support for frontline healthcare professionals, hospital administrators and quality managers.
The problem – cardiac arrest
In hospital cardiac arrest is a low frequency, high impact event. Prevention is better than a cure. Avoiding high mortality, high morbidity, and medico-legal risk, is a clinical and administrative goal closely aligned with the high quality care sought by patients and their families.
Timely identification of patients at risk provides clinical teams time to engage appropriate expertise, start new treatments, and to safely transfer patients to an intensive care or to a close observation unit.
The BCS RISQ framework is more than a decision support to prevent cardiac arrest. RISQ enables better prioritization of care and pre-emptive consultation – to improve efficiency, enable better staffing, patient transfer and referral.
RISQ is about better matching of care with need to improve outcomes.
BedsidePEWS™ is the company’s lead product and uses the RISQ framework to empower frontline clinicians who care for hospitalized children. BedsidePEWS is a scientifically validated documentation-based system of care to prevent near and actual cardiopulmonary arrest in children. It’s an FDA-approved solution to provide clinicians with timely information about the severity of illness for a child being monitored in an inpatient ward at the hospital.
BedsidePEWS comprises 4 key components. Each is supported by the BCS clinical team:
- a severity of illness score
- a documentation record to clearly present data for clinical decision-making
- a score-matched care recommendations (SMCR)
- a comprehensive implementation program
The BedsidePEWS severity score has been validated on over 5000 children, is simple and easy-to-use, an adds to the judgments of clinicians. The documentation record was designed by an inter-professional team with input from multiple stakeholders. It is simple and effective. Score-matched care recommendations were derived from the opinions of 280 healthcare professionals, and guide in multiple domains of review and monitoring to create a safety net for high quality clinical care. Each new score is linked to recommendations.
The implementation program is customized to meet the needs of individual hospitals and regions implementing BedsidePEWS. The BCS clinical team works with local implementation leaders to ensure successful implementation. Together BedsidePEWS is an integrated package, designed for healthcare professionals by healthcare professionals, to make care easier and better.
Furthermore, BedsidePEWS paper implementation has been in production for over 15 months and has provided support to clinicians for over 40,000 bed-days per month. Up-to-and including March 2015, BedsidePEWS has been live for over 730,000 bed-days!
