Founding Scientist (CSO): Dr. Christopher Parshuram


Dr. Christopher Parshuram (MBChB. DPhil.) is an Associate Professor at the University of Toronto, a Senior Scientist at the SickKids Research institute, and a Physician in the SickKids Paediatric Intensive Care Unit.

Trained as a critical care physician, clinical pharmacologist and safety scientist, Dr. Parshurams’ research is scientifically robust and pragmatically grounded by his clinical experience.

Peer-reviewed funding from the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada, the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), the Society of Critical Care Medicine and other bodies have lead to internationally recognized original research contributions – including the Bedside Paediatric Early Warning System.

Dr Parshuram’s research and development team at the Center for Safety Research has lead projects underpinning future clinical innovations in cardiac arrest prevention, drug therapy, and healthcare delivery.


Senior Clinical Manager: Ms. Kristen Middaugh, RN, BScN


Ms. Kristen Middaugh has more than 20 years of healthcare experience and was a Co-Inventor of BedsidePEWS.  As Project Manager of the BedsidePEWS research at the Centre of Safety Research, she coordinates implementation of BedsidePEWS and research amongst international paediatric hospitals and helps customize BedsidePEWS documentation for each hospital.  In addition, Ms. Middaugh provides education and support to the hospitals throughout their term. As the Senior Clinical Manager for BCS, she works closely with Dr. Parshuram to develop bedside clinical decision support tools for frontline staff.








Board of Directors: Rafi Hofstein


Dr. Rafi Hofstein is President and CEO of MaRS Innovation, a Toronto-based commercialization agent responsible for monetizing the research assets found within its member institutions. As the CEO of MaRS innovation and a BCS Board member, Dr. Hofstein works diligently with the BCS management team to provide the benefit of his many years of experience and unique business insight.  Dr. Hofstein received his PhD and Master of Science degrees in Life Sciences and Chemistry from the Weizmann Institute of Science in Rehovot, Israel.





Board of Directors: Jeff Mainland

Mr. Jeff Mainland is the Executive Vice President of Corporate Strategy, Quality, Performance and Communication at the Hospital for Sick Children.  Jeff provides strategic oversight and direction to the BCS management team.  Jeff holds an Honours Bachelor of Science Degree in Human Kinetics from the University of Guelph, a Diploma in Nuclear Medicine Technology from the Michener Institute for Applied Health Science and a Master’s Degree in Business Administration from Queen’s University.








Advisors: Jim Garner

Jim Garner

Mr. Jim Garner, formerly the Executive Vice President of Corporate Services at the Hospital for Sick Children, is a Special Advisor to the Board of Directors and works closely with the CEO on strategy, financing, and business development.

At the Hospital for Sick Children, Mr. Garner had executive leadership responsibility for Information Services and Technology, Health Records, Medical Engineering, Facilities, Business Services & Development, Research Operations, and International Affairs.
